Case Studies

JC Direct come across a wide range of queries, from asking about care options for loved ones to looking for support and social club options. Here are some examples of some of the situations we have helped out with:

Case Study One

Maisie is 79 and has just lost her husband Sam. She was his main carer for the last 3 years and looking after him took up most of her time. Her days are now lonely and she would like to get out and meet some people. She would also like a little help and advice as Sam used to look after all the paperwork. She wonders if there may be some benefits she is eligible for. Can Jewish Care help?

Yes we can. We have lots to keep Maisie busy. She may want to attend one of our day centres and/or go to one of our groups specifically for people who have lost a partner. If she feels she needs bereavement counselling – Jewish Care Direct will tell her who to contact. Maisie may like to do some volunteering – she might like to help out in the shop at the Sobell Centre or to help at mealtimes in one of our homes.

As for benefits advice, Jewish Care Direct would put her through to our specially trained benefits advisers who would guide her through the benefits process.

Case Study Two

Michelle is 59 and lives with her mother in the family home. She moved back in when she lost her husband two years ago. In the last year, her mother Hetty’s dementia has deteriorated and she has a community support worker from Jewish Care. In the day time she goes to a Special Day Care Centre but Michelle is alone with her every evening. She doesn’t want her mother to go into residential care but feels anxious and stressed by the situation and would like someone to talk to.  Can Jewish Care help Michelle?

Yes we can. Jewish Care has a supportive team called the Family Carers Team. This is a group of experienced individuals who are there to offer emotional support to family members. Within the team there is a dedicated worker who supports people caring for someone with dementia who could offer specialist help to Michelle. Alternatively, Michelle may want to go along to a support group where she can meet and share experiences with other carers in a similar situation.
