Six people from different walks of life have raised more than £11,000 for Jewish Care through taking part in the Flora London Marathon on Sunday 22nd April. The fastest was business consultant Nat Abenaim, from Maida Vale, who finished in 4 hours 13 despite walking the last two miles. He raised £1700 to be split between the charity and Leeds Jewish Welfare Board.
Wealth manager Gary Rokenson, from Edgware, finished in 4 hours 46, three minutes quicker than last year, raising over £2,000, and Lorett Bredenkamp, data base supervisor at Jewish Care’s Golders Green head office and finished in 6 hours 28 minutes, generating over £1500. Both claimed to have “hung up” their marathon boots, despite their enthusiasm for supporting the charity.
Mr Rokenson said: “The atmosphere was fantastic, unbelievable but it’s been very tough. I wanted to raise money for Otto Schiff Housing Association as my late grandmother was a resident of Leo Baeck House [run by Jewish Care].”
Running for the sixth time, Edgware-based chartered accountant David Specterman finished in 5 hours 20 minutes, raising £4,250 for Clore Manor, the care home where his mother lives. He said: “The race was obviously tough, especially because it was so hot and I had to be careful to pace myself throughout. However, I was fairly comfortable all the way through and was still running at the end and I did enjoy the Marathon.”
A knee injury prevented green entrepreneur and former City lawyer Jonny Goldstone from completing the course, although he raised £1800. “I absolutely loved the experience – it was great. But I had an injection before the race which wore off around the 15 mile mark and by the 20th mile I had to quit as I was in so much pain,” said Mr Goldstone. Meanwhile, Rookie taxi driver and security guard Zak Braham, 21, a marathon first-timer, finished in 6 hours 11 minutes. “I’ll be running again next year,” he declared. He has raised £1400.
Jewish Care’s fundraising director Richard Franklin said: “I am pleased that all our runners got home safely after such hot day – we are tremendously grateful for all their efforts. Not only did they give up their time on the day but they also put in hours of training, while encouraging friends and family to donate to Jewish Care.”
