Jewish Care makes a big contribution to Mitzvah Day

Mitzvah Day (Sunday 15th November) is all about asking people to give not their money, but their time. As a Mitzvah Day Partner, Jewish Care is undertaking two important tasks to help others in the community.

The charity is supporting WJR’s Operation Winter Survival, which will help impoverished Jewish families in the former Soviet Union confront another bitterly cold winter. By requesting a Survival Bag and filling it with the warm clothes and essentials these people desperately need, Jewish Care staff can help save lives.

Closer to home, the charity is also holding a Mitzvah Day Tay-Sachs Screening Session in Edgware on Mitzvah Day.

Jewish Care is Dancing with a volunteeralso delighted by the fact that fourteen groups will entertain the residents in Jewish Care homes in the ‘Sunshine to Seniors’ category of Mitzvah Day.

At Lady Sarah Cohen House, the Pandemonium Alyth Youth Choir will entertain the residents, and members of Chigwell and Hainault Synagogue will take their children to sing to the residents in Vi and John Rubens House.

Other singers include Edgware United Synagogue performing at Rela Goldhill Lodge anFlowers for Mitzvah Dayd Hendon United Synagogue at Ella & Ridley Jacobs. JFS school and Woodside Park Cheder will both be singing at Rubens House, taking morning and afternoon slots. Meanwhile, members of the Muswell Hill shul will be baking goodies with the residents of Rosetrees. Three different JLGB groups will entertain residents at Princess Alexandra Home, Raymond House and Osmond House.

After the performances, the children will stay on to chat with the residents and share refreshments.

Simon Morris, CEO of Jewish Care, said: “Mitzvah Day is a great concept - it raises the visibility of volunteering. We at Jewish Care are great supporters as it gives us an opportunity to get new people involved. They get the chance to see what we do and hopefully it engages them in our work for the longer term.”
