More and more people with dementia are being cared for in the community. This puts pressure on carers and families and has created a demand for services that help both those who have dementia and their carers (family or friends).

Our Special Day Care Centres are just one of the services we provide to help meet this need.

What do our Special Day Care Centres offer?

  • a programme of stimulating activities
  • a warm, safe, comfortable environment
  • trained staff and volunteers with appropriate qualifications
  • Jewish cultural and religious celebrations
  • respite for carers
  • ongoing reviews to ensure we meet the needs of each individual

Who can attend
The clients who attend our special day care centres have memory impairment and/or a diagnosis of a type of dementia.

In order to get the most out of attending the centres, clients should:

  • be able to derive benefit from the activities and stimulation offered, without causing undue distress or disruption to themselves or others
  • can travel to and from the centre safely, comfortably and without distress to themselves or others
  • clients need to be able to transfer from a seated position independently or with minimal assistance

Our staff must be able to manage the physical needs of our clients safely and without nursing support. We can administer medication with written authorisation from the carer and/or GP.

Choosing a centre
Clients and their carers can visit centres to see what we offer and whether it is suitable for their needs - we can arrange a guest day. A senior member of our special day care centre will assess prospective clients to confirm that the services are appropriate and suitable.

Care plans are negotiated for each client as part of our referral and assessment process. They are reviewed regularly so we can be certain the service meets the needs of the client and their carers. Additional support may be provided from one of Jewish Care’s other services, such as home care, and we also support carers through our Carers’ Network.

Referrals and admissions
Referrals can be made directly by social workers, care managers, GPs, hospitals and families. This process is straightforward – please contact Jewish Care Direct on 020 8922 2222.
