Fix-it Scheme

Our Fix-it scheme is designed to help disabled, elderly or frail clients with specific jobs around the house which, though small, are difficult to tackle.

The work is carried out by volunteers, who have received guidelines and advice from Jewish Care on health and safety issues. No charge is made for time or labour, but clients pay for the cost of all materials used.

The Fix-it Scheme volunteer will assess the job to be done and will then agree with the client on what materials need to be purchased. The volunteer will buy them and give the client a receipt.

The scheme does not replace work carried out by professional tradesmen such as electricians, plumbers and carpenters and there may be a limit to the time our volunteers have available.

Typical jobs that can be done include:

  • replacing light bulbs, changing fuses in plugs, tightening screws
  • unblocking sinks and baths and fixing broken shower heads
  • connecting dishwashers or washing machines to existing plumbing
  • repairing and refitting window locks, fitting door chains, spy holes, door bells
  • tacking down carpets to improve safety, fitting draught excluders
  • fitting battery smoke alarms. Client to provide stepladder if necessary, or ask volunteer to bring one
  • putting up small shelves
  • putting up/taking down curtains, moving light furniture, assembling flat-packed furniture
  • turning mattresses (2 volunteers required)
  • taking down suitcases, helping clients to pack for holidays, sorting possessions
  • moving telephone extensions

Please note, we don't do electrical or plumbing work, work involving gas or gas appliances, work involving large power tools, gardening, fencing or any sort of decorating, plastering, roofing or gutter work.

The scheme is co-ordinated by our occupational therapist. You can contact her to find out more on 020 8922 2000. Referrals are generally made by Jewish Care social workers or home care assistants.

At Stepney Day Centre, Redbridge JCC and Brenner Community Centre you can book a Fix-it volunteer via the Day Centre Organiser.
