Tony, member of Stepney Jewish Community Centre
For the past 25 years, Tony has been a member of the Stepney Jewish Community Centre, the last remaining Jewish service in the East End of London, where Tony has lived his whole life. He started coming to the centre after he retired, and has never looked back since! “Coming to the centre has allowed me to remain part of my community”, Tony says, “It’s given me a chance to make new friends and it keeps me busy”
During his time at the centre, Tony has discovered a talent for painting. Before he set foot in the centre he’d never picked up a paintbrush, but now his artwork adorns the walls for everyone to admire.
Recently, Tony was diagnosed with early onset dementia, but dedicated staff at the centre have been able to give him all the emotional and practical support he needs to help him manage his situation. “The carers are always there for me”, Tony explains,
I can talk to them about any problems I’m having and they will sort things out."
