Jewish Care Michael Sobell Community Centre members, Selig Court tenants, staff and volunteers enjoyed preparing for Shabbat together with Norwood residents, volunteers and staff at a Challah Bake held on Thursday, 11 October 2018 at Jewish Care’s Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Campus in Golders Green.

Welcoming the 70 participants and 20 volunteers Rabbi Junik, Jewish Care’s Spiritual & Pastoral Support Worker, said; “Shabbat is all about uniting us as a community. Today we are uniting Jewish Care and Norwood through the tradition of Challah baking”.

94 year old Ruth Manford, a member of Jewish Care’s Michael Sobell Community Centre was a keen challah baker commenting; “I used to make Challah every week but it’s been a long time since I last made it. It was nice to make it again, I enjoyed it”.

Geoffrey Segal, Norwood resident and Jewish Care volunteer said; “We used flour and poppy seeds and sprinkles to make the challah. We’ve done very well and it’s been enjoyable.”

Isabel Bloom, Norwood Volunteer said: “Having worked at Jewish Care’s Michael Sobell Centre as a volunteer hairdresser for many years, I had a long break from volunteering and then joined Norwood. I am so impressed with the work that is being achieved at both charities, the amazing men and women who give up their time to volunteer, and work of the dedicated organisers. I have been looking forward to the Challah bake - it was such an enjoyable afternoon for everyone involved.”

Richard Shone, Jewish Care’s Community Engagement and Volunteers Manager, said,

“It was fantastic that residents and clients from Norwood and Jewish Care homes and community centres got together to make challah in preparation for Shabbat. The atmosphere was great and we look forward to welcoming them back again soon”.

Sharon Bradman, Volunteering Manager, Norwood added: “Working together in partnership with Jewish Care at this year’s Challah Bake, now in its second year, is so enjoyed by the people supported by Norwood. Our team of stalwart volunteers are an integral part of this collaborative activity and I’m delighted to see that it has been so very well attended, with such a warm and fun atmosphere.”
