100th birthday celebrations for Sylvia19 Jun 2019
Sylvia Milton recently celebrated her 100th birthday at Jewish Care’s Lady Sarah Cohen House with her son, Michael and family from London and Brooklyn. Sylvia has three grandchildren and three great grandchildren, who are between 1 and 5 years old. At her party, her family came to celebrate with her from London and the US and Rabbi Junik, Jewish Care’s spiritual and pastoral advisor, joined them all leading the singing to wish her a hearty “Mazeltov”.
Sylvia’s son, Michael Sherling said, “Mum’s 100th birthday was very special, she had a really good day. Her grandson flew from New York to be there and the atmosphere was fantastic! Mum likes to have a slice of tea and cake and she always enjoys the concert and music in the home, especially the singing sessions which have been wonderful for her. She joins in with every word of every song and the care is fantastic.”
Before she developed dementia and moved to Lady Sarah Cohen House in September 2013, Sylvia was living in Stanmore. The family had moved from Brighton in 1962 and Sylvia is now one of the oldest members of Hove Synagogue.
Sylvia married Henry Sherling at Brixton Synagogue in 1941. During the Blitz Sylvia was a fire warden whilst Henry served in the Forces. Sylvia became a home maker, whilst her husband, Henry, ran his business of shoe shops. Henry sadly passed away in 1975 and Sylvia remarried, though was widowed again.
