Brother and sister team, Simon Davies and Niki Caplan, had the idea to make purple masks for Jewish Care. Together with Niki’s friend Suzi Slatkin and Simon and Niki’s niece, Sophie Coleman, 17, they have now raised more than £10,000 for Jewish Care and made 1500 masks to keep people safe during the pandemic through Purplemasks4JC. They have made the washable and reusable facemasks for a minimum £5 donation to Jewish Care in a range of purple fabrics.

Simon has a Marketing degree and years of experience as a volunteer working in the charity’s fundraising and marketing teams. He has fundraised previously for Jewish Care by doing a tandem skydive. Simon lives at Jewish Care’s Rela Goldhill at Otto Schiff care home for people with physical disabilities in Golders Green and Niki, lives in Stanmore, is a GP, Brown Owl and a Mum of two.

Simon says, “Thank you to everyone who supported Purple Masks4JC so far and do keep the orders coming to raise much needed funds for an amazing cause, Jewish Care, who are doing an amazing job of looking after all the residents and clients. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved.”

Niki adds, “We’re so happy that we’ve been able to make a difference. It was great to find a way to raise money when so many fundraising events have sadly had to be cancelled because it the pandemic. Since the government’s announcement everyone has needed to buy at least one and this way they’re donating money to a great cause. It’s a win-win.

“My friend Suzi was kind enough to offer to help when I started sewing the masks. She has up-skilled herself in her sewing machine knowhow and has spent every spare minute making masks to allow us to get to 1500 between us.  We’re really pleased that our niece, Sophie who is 17 and goes to JFS, has joined the sewing crew too.”

Jewish Care’s Director of Fundraising and Community Engagement, Adam Overlander-Kaye, says, “It’s fantastic that Purplemasks4JC have found a way to help keep the community safe whilst supporting Jewish Care. We are so grateful to Simon, Niki, Suzi and Sophie for all their hard work in reaching this amazing milestone.”
