100 mile Tour de Jewish Care

25 Oct 2020

Sandra Alexander, Wellbeing Coordinator at Jewish Care’s Selig Court Retirement Living apartments is cycling a Tour de Jewish Care of 100 miles on her exercise bike. Her journey, which she began last week, virtually covers the distance of Jewish Care’s services from Stepney to Selig Court via Southend. She will be riding each day for 2.5 weeks to raise sponsorship for the organisation’s wellbeing activities and events online.

Her grandson, Ezra, who is a keen cyclist himself, has helped Sandra to make a fundraising film and Sandra has the support of famous friends, including Dame Maureen Lipman DBE.

Sandra says, “Covid-19 has dramatically impacted on the way we are able to socially engage with clients. Since the start of the pandemic we have been expanding our online programme. We offer weekly drama classes to Holocaust survivors and refugees and community centre members.

“Art appreciation, guest speakers and musical afternoons are just some of our Zoom events available to the whole organisation, including our residents and community centre members and to the wider community. The online programme is helping to alleviate isolation and depression and providing stimulation, excitement and a feeling of community in these difficult times.”

Adam Overlander-Kaye, Jewish Care’s Director of Fundraising & Community Engagement, “I’d like to wish Sandra the best of luck for her 100km cycle challenge. Sandra has thrown herself into this challenge with great passion and with the same energy that she runs the current virtual programme of activities. These activities are a lifeline at the moment and are vital in boosting the wellbeing of our Retirement Living tenants and the virtual community.”
