Local MP visits Holocaust Survivors’ Centre for Holocaust Memorial Day

25 Jan 2018

Matthew Offord, MP joined members of Jewish Care’s Holocaust Survivors Centre to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

The MP for Hendon joined members in lighting candles to remember the millions of people who were murdered in the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Aviva Trup, manager of Jewish Care’s Holocaust Survivors' Centre said: “As this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day falls on Shabbat we have chosen to mark this in the centre today. Days like today are difficult yet important times for our members. Many of them lost their entire family in the Holocaust. For Matthew to come and show his support and respect means a lot to all of us here at the Holocaust Survivors Centre”.

Matthew Offord, MP commented; “It is a pleasure to come to the Holocaust Survivors Centre once again to meet these remarkable people who had such terrible shared experiences and to witness again people who are living incredible lives. HMD is an opportunity not only to remember what great atrocities happened to so many people but to celebrate the achievements of those who died. It has been said that to forget those who perished would be to condone them to a second death so we must never forget”.

The theme of this year’s HMD is The Power of Words. Matthew Offord paid tribute to the centre’s members who share their difficult stories with younger generations.
